Galerie Reinhard Hauff is delighted to announce the solo show as is by Berlin-based artist Julio Rondo (*1952 in Sontrondio / Spain). Rondo works with acrylic and spray painted behind glass in a technique he has developed over many years. He pays particular attention to the phenomenon of involuntary emergence of memory. It is, however, not the recovery of the past as a figurative or narrative that is significant for the artist, but the "essence" of stored perceptions of people, events and places that surface in his compositions. Bold, ornamental gestures trace and trail the artist's impressions as he searches for a visual translation of resurging memories and the feelings associated with them. The genius of his work lies in broad gestures of his brushstrokes on colorful surfaces and handwritten airbrush tracks. Their vivid spontaneity notwithstanding, these compositions are strictly executed and thought-out. Characteristic for Rondo is that he first paints the composition as a kind of negative painting behind glass, which finally constitutes the foreground, then reinforces the material character of the color and allows the observer to enter directly into his translucent pictorial motifs.

The abstract formal language of deep, transparent acrylic fields and sprayed lines manifest an archive of past experience, which carries a deeply personal intimacy. Rondo as an artist interprets the concrete act of remembering in his paintings, and his suggestive titles convey a repertoire of intimate situations which form the connective tissue between the compositions on view.

Julio Rondo lives and works in Berlin and Stuttgart. He is a Professor of Visual Communication at Merz Akademie in Stuttgart since 1989."
