"WEAArt talks : TRISTAN MANCO (uk)
Fri entre
Tristan Manco has been called the world’s leading authority on street art and is also the author many turn to to find out the latest trends in emerging contemporary art. He also acts as curator for events such as the renowned Cans Festival and for brands including Wahaca, and is a successful illustrator and graphic designer with projects such as the cover for Blur’s iconic ‘Think Tank’ album in his portfolio. He has published eight books with Thames and Hudson, his first ‘Stencil Graffiti’ (2002) being the first ever to profile the now renowned artist Banksy.
Besides self-expression a central element of art and design is its ability to communicate and resonate with its audience. So it is with street art and urban creativity that some of the most successful and exemplary work in this genre has a strong component of message, concept or emotional sensation that allows it to connect with the public, thereby creating an effective and meaningful dialogue between artist and spectator. The aim of this presentation is to focus on this area of communication and creativity in street art and accesses its impact on local and global communities. In the process we pose a number of questions, such as: Through its various expressions such as murals, activism and installations, what is the impact of street art in terms of social, political and creative contexts? How does it highlight global issues? How can street art, public art and more broadly art per se be used to affect or instigate social change?
